South:
Advantages:
- It had the advantage terrain.
- It had a military tradition that encouraged young men to serve in the armed forces or attend a military school. While many people had experience in the Civil War.
- It had some great leadership commanders.
Disadvantages:
- The population less than the North.
- It lacked a number of essential factories and industries which supplied the basically war materials.
- The slave population which is a part of rebellion and assistance to the Northern cause.
- The transportation is poorer than the north.
North:
Advantages:
- Its population was several times than the South.
- The North had a better transportation network, mainly highways, canals, and railroads, which made it is easier of the transportation in military field.
- It has sea supremacy, the Union navy was more capable and dominant, while the army was better trained and better supplied.
- There was more authorization of the north as the legitimate government in U.S around the world. So, it has more loans and trade concessions.
Disadvantages:
Some senior generals did not successfully utilize the weaknesses of the South and accept the suggestions of their commander-in-chief.
